Established in 1984, the National Horseracing College is a Centre of Excellence for training in the horseracing industry. Delivering trained staff into horse racing.  Working as a team, exercise enthusiastic good leadership to nurture, inspire and motivate all learners to develop a passion for horses and racing and the skills to work in the industry.

Training courses to suit those with no riding experience through to experienced riders. Nationally recognised qualifications including Diplomas and Intermediate and Advanced Apprenticeships.

Courses  

Level 1 Diploma in Work Based Racehorse Care (18 week residential Foundation Course)  

The foundation course consists of 12 weeks residential at the NHC followed by a 6 week work experience placement with a racehorse trainer. Learners will receive lectures and demonstrations and will work to a routine similar to a racing stable whilst at the NHC and then complete the 6 weeks work experience in a yard. 

Learners will gain; Level 1 Diploma in Work Based Racehorse Care, Functional Skills Qualifications, Emergency First Aid Certificate, L3 Award in Principles of transporting horses by road on short journeys, L1 Award introduction to horseracing industry and life skills. 

This course is for school leavers age 16 - 18 and also for 19+ learners. No previous equine experience or academic qualifications are required to enrol. We can offer the course for riders and non-riders. 

Upon successful completion of the course suitable learners, with the right aptitude will be secured permanent, full time employment in a UK racing yard.

Level 2 Apprenticeship - Equine Groom Apprenticeship Standard 

The Level 2 Apprenticeship is for learners who successfully complete the foundation course. This programme will include a Level 2 Equine Groom Apprenticeship Standard together with Functional Skills in English and Maths at a minimum Level 1.  

This course is completed largely at the learner’s place of work, with a member of the NHC Roving Tutor team visiting regularly to guide and support learners and there is a final one day assessment.  

Anyone aged 16 or over, who works at least 16 hours a week, in a licensed racing stable can apply. 

Level 3 Apprenticeship - Senior Equine Groom Standard 

The Level 3 Apprenticeship is for learners who successfully complete the Level 2 Apprenticeship. This programme will include a Level 3 Senior Equine Groom Standard together with Functional Skills in English and Maths at Level 2.

This course is completed largely at the learner’s place of work, with a member of the NHC Roving Tutor team visiting regularly to guide and support learners and there is a final one day assessment.  

Anyone aged 16 or over, who works at least 16 hours a week, in a licensed racing stable can apply.  Learners must already have completed their Level 2 Apprenticeship or have the relevant occupational experience.
