From specialist Diplomas to degrees and postgraduate qualifications, there is sure to be a course that suits you. You can even study for A Levels at Hartpury and bring your own horse but you don’t need to ride to study with us!
But perhaps the most special thing about Hartpury is that there are so many opportunities for our students to gain real world experience on our own specialist campus.
Our equine students are particularly spoilt on that front. Whether you're studying Horse Management, Equine Performance, Science or Equestrian Sports - our new state of the art Rider Performance Centre, our own commercial yard and Equine Therapy Centre with its impressive water treadmill, plus our three international equestrian events, provide students with work experience and exceptional industry contacts and partnerships on their doorstep.
From specialist BTEC Diplomas to degrees and postgraduate qualifications, there is sure to be a course that suits you. You can even study for A-levels at Hartpury and bring your own horse, but you don’t need to ride to study with us.
Level 2 Diploma Horse Care -This course is an excellent introduction to all aspects of horse care and riding. Alongside the theory, you will be involved in the daily care of the horses through hands-on experience on the yard that will give you the practical skills necessary to gain employment within the equine industry e.g. a riding school or livery yard.
Level 3 Diploma in Horse Management – You’ll enhance your theory based knowledge and practical skills by utilising the outstanding equine facilities on campus and be involved in the daily care of the horses through yard duties. Successful completion of this programme will allow you to progress on to university level study.
Level 3 Extended Diploma Horse Management (Business) and Level 3 Extended Diploma Horse Management (Equitation) - You’ll gain an in-depth understanding of horse management and business through theory-based and practical sessions, giving you the specialised knowledge needed to pursue a range of careers. You’ll also complete work experience and have the chance to help run Hartpury’s equine competitions to give your CV a boost.
Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma Horse Management – You’ll gain a good grounding in key aspects of horse management and equitation (if the riding option is chosen). Studying the theory will ensure that you have an understanding of the importance of correct horse management and how this impacts on equine performance while the practical units will teach the skills that are required to work in an equine yard looking after a variety of horses.
University Level Courses
Foundation Degree Equine Science and Management – This degree provides students with a more practically orientated approach to university level study. Additionally, students can engage with a range of work experiences, ultimately resulting in plenty of angles from which they can market themselves following graduation. The majority of modules on this programme are mapped against the BHS Horse Knowledge and Care syllabus, up to stage three.
BSc (Hons) Equine Science - You will build a strong understanding of equine science and be able to tailor the degree to your career interests. Topics of study could include anatomy and physiology and animal health, animal genetics, animal microbiology, equine behaviour, stud management and equine therapy. There’s an opportunity to take a work placement (sandwich year) on this degree.
BSc (Hons) Equine Science with Therapy - This programme is designed to provide a broad understanding of equine science, with a special focus on equine therapy, exposing you to the scientific principles which underpin horse health, performance, therapy and rehabilitation. The programme can also act as a springboard into relevant further study required to pursue a career as an equine therapist.
Integrated Masters Equine Science - Students will complete the work for a Bachelors degree before advancing to their final year of Masters work. Key strands include Nutrition, Therapy and Rehabilitation, Breeding, Behaviour and Welfare, and Health and Disease.
BSc (Hons) Equestrian Sports Coaching - This degree aims to provide students with the skills, experience, and understanding required of professional coaches within the equine industry. Aspiring and current coaches can gain a higher education qualification, relevant industry-recognised qualifications and research experience to showcase their knowledge in equestrian coaching.
BSc (Hons) Equestrian Sports Science - You will develop an in-depth knowledge of the support required for horses and riders competing at the highest levels of competition in all aspects of equine sport. As well as Hartpury’s exceptional equine facilities, students will have access to modern laboratories, including the human sports science laboratory.
BSc (Hons) Equine Business Management - This degree combines business modules with equine industry and functional equine science modules. Students are able to widen their skill base and develop key contacts with a work placement module, with an additional opportunity to take a sandwich year in industry.
BSc (Hons) Equine Management (top-up) - The top-up degree can be completed part-time as well as in one year full-time, making it a great option for those already working in industry. It includes a mixture of business and science modules, as well as a dissertation, giving students the opportunity to pursue their own interests and develop their own research.
Foundation Degree Equine Performance - If you are interested in a career aimed at managing performance horses, this course will give you the specific knowledge and skills necessary for entry into this exciting industry of equine performance. There’s an opportunity to take a work placement (sandwich year) on this degree.
Higher Education Certificate Equine Science and Management - if you're already working in the equine industry this course provides an ideal opportunity to gain a higher education qualification. Modules are mapped alongside the BHS Horse Knowledge and Care Syllabus up to stage three and you will also hone your practical skills on the Hartpury Yard.
International Horseracing Business - NEW FOR 2017 This course will enable students to develop key business skills throughout their studies, whilst enjoying unrivalled access to the horseracing and wider equine industry. Placements in industry will be an integral part of the course, with the opportunity to experience horseracing operations at home and abroad.
BSc (Hons) Racehorse Performance and Rehabilitation - NEW FOR 2017 This course makes use of the excellent onsite facilities in equine therapy and performance analysis at Hartpury. There will also be opportunities to take part in International study trips and experience racing first hand during a second year placement.
Intergrated Masters Sports Therapy (Equestrian) * - NEW FOR 2017 This unique course makes use of our outstanding equine and sports therapy facilities, with an option to spend a sandwich year in Industry. Students have the chance to graduate as an equestrian specialist sports therapist, with accreditation from the Society of Sports Therapy. *Subject to validation
Post Graduate Courses
MSc Veterinary Physiotherapy - If you're a qualified physiotherapist looking to broaden your horizons and become a veterinary physiotherapy practitioner then this is the course for you. Utilising our high quality facilities and appraising the latest research in the field you will develop the practical and critical thinking skills to take you one step further in your career with animals as well as humans.
MSc Equine Science - With a range of flexible study options, including PG Diploma and PC Certificate, in full or part time study blocks, this programme enables anyone with a passion for horses to take your knowledge to the next level. From the water tredmill to gait analysis, you will get first hand experience of modern technology and the latest techniques utilised in the field of Equine Science.
MRes Equestrian Performance- If you've always wanted to investigate an area of equestrian performance then this course will help equip you with the knowledge and skills to develop practical solutions for problems in this field. In combination with taught modules you will receive support from expert staff and have access to outstanding facilities in order to produce a research project that will make a valuable contribution to the field of equestrian performance.
PGCert Equine Behaviour and Welfare and PGCert Equestrian Performance and Rehabilitation - These Post Graduate courses provide valuable insight into the fundamentals of equine management and performance. This may set you up for further study and research or can enhance the knowledge of any equine professional currently working in the Industry. By evaluating the latest research with the support of our dedicated staff, students can gain insight into the cutting edge of their study.
