The college runs equine apprenticeships, further education and degree programmes covering all aspects of the industry and has an outstanding track record of student success.
Riders of a high standard, or those who have the potential to succeed at a high level, are also given the opportunity to join our prestigious Equine Academy. Academy riders are provided with expert coaching and tuition to enable them to compete at a high level.
Students studying at Riseholme College have access to the outstanding facilities at our Bishop Burton Campus, this includes the impressive Bishop Burton Arena, Therapy Centre with Water Treadmill, CET Equine Spa, Solarium and Zamar, Rider Fitness and Performance Suite, two indoor arenas, three outdoor arenas and stabling for over 100 horses.
Specialist equipment includes Quintic Gait Analysis software, FLIR Thermal Imaging cameras, Polar Heart Monitors, Televet ECG, Synchronicity Rein Tension Gauges, Noldus Observe XP software and extensive laboratory-based equipment.
Riseholmes commercial equine centre hosts an extensive range of regional, national and international competitions, demonstrations and clinics, and is a BHS training and examination centre. Equine students gain experience by working alongside the tutors and instructors at these events, developing the practical skills needed to work in industry.
Level 2 Apprenticeship in Equine Groom – As an apprentice, you will work alongside experienced staff, gain job-specific skills, knowledge and behaviours within the equine industry. You will earn a wage and be released to study during your working week.
Level 3 Apprenticeship in Senior Equine Groom - As an apprentice, you will provide and co-ordinate the day to day care of horses. You will lead by example and be able to implement effective systems of work. You will earn a wage and be released to study during your working week.
Further Education Courses
This is a practical programme with an emphasis on working with horses to allow you to gain the skills required to work in the equine industry. As part of the course, you will also develop your basic knowledge and understanding of horse care and what it entails.
City and Guilds Level 2 Technical Diploma in Horse Care - This course has been developed for ambitious people wishing to pursue a career within the equine industry, providing students with an excellent opportunity to develop a sound knowledge and understanding in horse care and or riding through a mix of practical, classroom and work-based study.
City and Guilds Level 3 in Equine Management - This course provides core training for anyone wishing to develop an active career that includes riding, teaching equine science and therapy, for example. Students gain practical applied experience for all units, including riding, teaching and caring for horses, science behind rehabilitation and performance.
Access to Higher Education Diploma in Land-Based Studies – Equine - Access to Higher Education courses are designed to prepare students aged 19+ for a Foundation Degree programme. This course is for students with a passion for working with horses and develops the practical skills and knowledge needed to progress into Higher Education.
FdSc Applied Equine Management (Coaching) - This programme will enable students to develop capable practical equine management skills as well as provide sound academic knowledge in order to promote equine health and performance in both the commercial and competition setting. You will be able to tailor the focus of your degree through elective modules to studying either a coaching or therapy based pathway.
FdSc Applied Equine Management (Therapy) - This programme will enable students to develop capable practical equine management skills as well as provide sound academic knowledge in order to promote equine health and performance in both the commercial and competition setting. You will be able to tailor the focus of your degree through elective modules to studying either a coaching or therapy based pathway.
FdSc Equine Sports Science and Coaching - The programme provides skills and knowledge in assessing and recommending strategies to improve horse and rider performance, by developing an understanding of physical, psychological, and behavioural factors that can affect horse-rider combinations.
BSc (Hons) Equine Health and Nutrition - This programme provides an in-depth specialist understanding of the wellbeing of the horse through study of the principles underpinning equine health and nutritional management. It seeks to provide a stimulating and challenging experience for students wishing to gain scientific knowledge alongside valuable laboratory practical experience in order to promote the health, welfare and optimise nutrition of the equine athlete.
