Bicton College is based in East Devon, near Exeter, and set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just two miles from the Jurassic Coast. The historic Georgian mansion, commercial farm, animal husbandry school, modern veterinary nursing building, world-class engineering and heavy plant machinery workshop, walled garden and arboretum are all set in over 200 hectares of historic parkland.

Whether that’s the welfare, husbandry and supervision of horses in a stable or livery, training thoroughbred racehorses, coaching and breeding, or being a jockey, show jumper or support technician, we can help you achieve your goal every step of the way.

The one year Level 1 course will teach you the basic skills to start your career in equine management. Skills include mucking out, grooming, cleaning horse tack, feeding horses, riding and handling horses under direction and much more. This course is available at Duchy College Roseanne, Stoke Climsland and Bicton College.
This one year course is for anyone wishing to start a career within the equine industry. This course gives an insight into some of the diverse areas of employment available in the equine sector developing your skills to support your career goals. You can choose a riding or non-riding pathway.
This is a work-based course which includes both theoretical and practical training in all areas of riding, training horses, managing yards and caring for horses. During the course you will plan and monitor horse feeding, nutrition and preparing horses for work and competition. Assessment is continuous throughout the course.
Equine Groom Apprenticeship Level 2
Apprenticeships allow you to work while gaining a nationally recognised qualification at the same time, so why not combine your love of horses with earning money? Over the course of 15-18 months, you will be working in paid employment within the equine industry and you will spend one day every two weeks during term time at college. You’ll study a wide range of subjects around the care of all different types of horses. If you ride or do not ride, don’t worry – there are specialised routes that you can take which include riding, non-riding, racing, breeding or driving.
Horse Management Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3
This Level 3 apprenticeship will help you prepare for a more supervisory role, which could include planning horses’ diet, nutrition and health plans. During the course you will learn how to promote and maintain the health and well-being of horses, prepare horses for work, maintain their health and well-being during transportation and ensure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety.
