Whether that’s the welfare, husbandry and supervision of horses in a stable or livery, training thoroughbred racehorses, coaching and breeding, or being a jockey, show jumper or support technician, we can help you achieve your goal every step of the way.

The one year Level 1 course will teach you the basic skills to start your career in equine management. Skills include mucking out, grooming, cleaning horse tack, feeding horses, riding and handling horses under direction and much more. This course is available at Duchy College Stoke Climsland and Bicton College.
This one year course is for anyone wishing to start a career within the equine industry. This course gives an insight into some of the diverse areas of employment available in the equine sector developing your skills to support your career goals. You can choose a riding or non-riding pathway.
During this one or two year course you will study all aspects of equine management, including feeding and nutrition, biology, health, behaviour and welfare of horses and business management with options around both riding and non-riding routes. Assessment includes external examinations and successful completion provides a qualification equivalent to A-levels and the opportunity to move on to university study.
Equine Groom Apprenticeship Level 2
Apprenticeships allow you to work while gaining a nationally recognised qualification at the same time, so why not combine your love of horses with earning money? Over the course of 15-18 months, you will be working in paid employment within the equine industry and you will spend one day every two weeks during term time at college. You’ll study a wide range of subjects around the care of all different types of horses. If you ride or do not ride, don’t worry – there are specialised routes that you can take which include riding, non-riding, racing, breeding or driving.
Horse Management Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3
This Level 3 apprenticeship will help you prepare for a more supervisory role, which could include planning horses’ diet, nutrition and health plans. During the course you will learn how to promote and maintain the health and well-being of horses, prepare horses for work, maintain their health and well-being during transportation and ensure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety.
Students will study a range of practical and academic modules ranging from equine anatomy, biomechanics to equine behaviour, welfare and ethics and practical equitation, as well as beginning their study of research skills. In the second year the course progresses on to cover equine performance management, equine exercise physiology, health and disease and the students individual research projects. Alongside these module’s students will choose two of the four option modules, coaching and teaching, equine business performance and sustainability, reproduction and obstetrics or pharmacy and diagnostics. This will allow students to complete individual specialised pathways dependent on chosen career pathways focussing on coaching, equine health, equine health industry, or reproduction and stud management.
