Based in York, Askham Bryan College specialises in land-based subjects and offers a range of further education college courses, apprenticeships and degree-level programmes from University Centre Askham Bryan (UCAB). UCAB is the Higher Education arm of the College. A range of validated degrees (Undergraduate and Postgraduate) are delivered at the Askham Bryan College York campus. University Centre offers degrees in areas of study including agriculture, animal management, forestry, equine and veterinary nursing.
With excellent facilities and passionate staff, complemented by a Riding Academy and Riding Teams for students to join, Askham Bryan College is the perfect place for students who are looking to broaden their experience working with horses and to progress towards a career in the equine industry. Our equine degree programmes also offer an exciting range of study opportunities.
The College hosts events throughout the year including point to point, eventing and dressage disciplines – allowing our students to get first-hand experience of the full staging of and participation in our programme of equine events. The college has a strong relationship with The British Horse Society, often holding equine events, dressage and jumping clinics at our Centre including British Eventing Horse Trials and a Point to Point Event.
The Equestrian Centre, based at Askham Bryan College’s York campus, has an indoor arena measuring 70m x 30m along with an outdoor school measuring 60m x 25m in addition to three indoor yards, stabling and support for up to 50 horses. There is also a cross country training area including various jumps and horses suitable for riders of all levels including speciality sports horses. Our equine tutors have specialist qualifications and practical experience, including international equine sport management experience. We have a variety of horses which our students work with, from happy, easy cobs through to dressage horses. We also have hunt horses and event horses, therefore we are able to accommodate riders from grass roots through to competition level.
The Askham Bryan Equine Academy aims to support and develop high calibre riders and those who have the potential to succeed at a high level in the future. The Academy is open to both Further and Higher Education students enrolled on a course at Askham Bryan College and UCAB. Members of the Academy will receive a structured and supportive training programme whilst studying for their main academic qualification. There are two levels within the Askham Bryan Equine Academy: the Advanced Squad and the Development Squad.

MSc Applied Animal Behaviour and Welfare
The MSc programme in Applied Animal Behaviour and Welfare is aimed at those who are due to graduate or have graduated in a related subject area. Alternatively, you may
be employed within the animal industry with significant experience and would like to develop higher level skills relating to clinical behaviour in animals. Animal welfare is increasingly becoming a focus in all animal related industries, with increasing demand for clinical behaviourists and trainers across the UK and internationally.

BSc/BSc (Hons) Equine Science with Management
A three-year honours degree programme which includes skills and knowledge that can be applied to a wide range of areas within the equine industry. On this programme there is an emphasis on science. Students on full time BSc programmes must complete a minimum of 10 weeks approved work experience to acquire a minimum of 30 placement credits.
BSc/BSc (Hons) Equine Science and Management (Top Up)
The BSc/BSc (Hons) Equine Science & Management (top-up) programme has been designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills to enter the equine industry. This programme integrates knowledge and skills that can be applied to a wide range of areas within the equine industry. On this programme there is an emphasis on science. The equine industry continues to develop and therefore the need for employees with appropriate technical knowledge and skills continues to evolve. The programme will provide students with the opportunity to develop the specific knowledge, practical and technical skills fundamental to working in the equine industry. The key scientific and business management principles will be covered. This one-year course will give students the opportunity to apply existing skills and newly learned knowledge to a variety of industry relevant situations, thereby preparing for work and more advanced study. As part of the honours pathway students will be required to undertake a research project, giving them an opportunity to focus for a prolonged period of time on a subject of particular interest with possibilities of publication.
Foundation Degree (FdSc) Equine Science and Management
This course will help you develop knowledge about the systems and structures of the horse and how the horse’s body responds to exercise, injury and rehabilitation. You will learn about key business management skills and issues facing the equine industry today. Additionally, you will benefit from being able to develop your practical and horse husbandry skills within a British Horse Society approved training centre.
Extended FdSc Equine Science and Management
This introductory year will get you ready for level 4 study within the equine sector and is ideal for career changers, applicants who are just getting started in the equine sector or if applicants do not meet the entry requirements for the FdSc programme. It is aimed to students wanting to work in the equine sector in industries and covers a range of topics such as equine welfare, coaching, behaviour, business and marketing.

Equine Level 3 (Equine Management)
This study programme is designed to provide the opportunity for students to gain detailed academic knowledge and a comprehensive understanding of equitation, animal/equine science, equine events and business in relation to horse management. The course provides students with a valid route into Higher Education or a direct route into practical/operational employment within the equine industry.
