Head Of Welfare

Closing Date for Applicants:
Monday 25th February 2019

Home based with nationwide travel to undertake welfare visits

3/4 time (10 – 15 days per month inc. occasional weekend work)

Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) is British Horseracing’s official charity for the welfare of horses who have retired from racing.

We are seeking a highly knowledgeable and motivated individual with an extensive background in equine welfare to oversee the charity’s welfare responsibilities, including administration of the ‘vulnerable horse scheme’ and the placement, where appropriate, of horses into RoR Accredited Rehoming Centres. This is an exciting opportunity for a self-managed, motivated individual with relevant horseracing and demonstrable equine welfare experience.

 About the role

Reporting to the Chief Executive, the successful candidate will be responsible for managing the placement and funding of vulnerable former racehorses into the care of accredited rehoming centres.

You will be responsible for developing and maintaining a nationwide network of veterinary support who are able to attend cases at short notice and assist in the inspection of horses and of premises where appropriate.

At times, you will also be required to work closely with the RSPCA, World Horse Welfare and other equine welfare organisations. On occasions, you will be required to act quickly on cases and be available to respond to further queries or concerns at short notice.

The role requires approximately 10 - 15 days’ work per month and could entail some unsociable hours or working in the evenings or at weekends. The role entails working both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.

About you

You will possess extensive knowledge and practical experience of horses together with a sound understanding of the law relating to animal welfare.

The successful candidate will have a working knowledge of the horseracing industry and the charitable sector, and ideally a background in veterinary medicine. They will also be able to demonstrate excellent communication and inter-personal skills to build relationships at all levels.

As the needs of the charity change this role will change accordingly, therefore this advertisement should be viewed as a guideline. We welcome enquiries from everyone and value diversity in our workforce.

If you feel you have the relevant skills and experience, please email your current CV with a covering letter to: Philippa Gilmore at pgilmore@ror.org.uk Alternatively post your application to Retraining of Racehorses, Office 6, Westfield Farm, East Garston, Berkshire, RG17 7HD
