The British Horse Society is the nation’s leading equine charity with a passion for horses that is backed by knowledge and expertise. The BHS represents and provides a range of services for horse riders, horse owners, enthusiasts and professionals. 

Working within the Operations Team of the Welfare Department, you will contribute to its aim of preventing breaches of equine welfare by providing education and advice to horse owners and members of the public.  You will support and facilitate the BHS network of more than 200 volunteer Welfare Officers and liaise with other equine welfare organisations.

  • You will be the first point of contact for telephone and email enquiries from the public asking for advice and provide excellent responses and customer service in responding to queries.
  • You will also receive welfare concerns from members of the public and ensure that these are allocated to Welfare Officers as appropriate.
  • It will be your responsibility to plan, organise, promote and deliver nationwide Welfare Officer training sessions, manage the Welfare Officer Facebook group and maintain regular communication with Welfare Officers including updates, annual appraisal calls and CPD/training opportunities.
  • You will liaise with the Volunteer Manager to resolve volunteer complaints or misconduct issues.
  • The role will also include developing, in conjunction with the Welfare Operations Manager, the euthanasia scheme “Friends at the End” and developing and maintaining links with the Welfare Officers of other charities.

The successful applicant will be of graduate calibre with exceptionally strong equine knowledge (equivalent to at least BHS Stage 3 Care).  They will have an excellent customer service attitude, be enthusiastic and self-motivated with excellent team-working skills.  They will also have volunteer coordination and support skills, and have first class presentation skills.  They must have a flexible attitude to travelling around the UK and to undertake occasional weekend and evening work.
